302 Course Objectives

Information technology (IT) is a valuable resource needed to achieve the strategic goals of an organization. This course helps managers identify strategic objectives and manage projects that are important for information technology and ecommerce. Case Studies and other Assignments will support key concepts and ideal business practices while teaching how to balance critical organizational objectives. Students are expected to demonstrate technological fluency in IT skills and IT concepts.

Successful students should be able to:

1. Understand how to plan and manage projects.
2. Appreciate the business value of different types of information systems and applications that help achieve strategic organizational goals.
3. Use software to develop websites and manage projects.
4. Understand ecommerce and how it applies to an organization’s strategic objectives.
5. Critique website content, organization, and design.
6. Design, gather data for, and build a prototype website using a template-based application as part of their class Term Project.
7. Learn new presentation techniques to effectively communicate IT concepts to a variety of stakeholders.

Information technology (IT) is an important driver and enabler of the dramatic transformation of the business landscape. This course is designed to provide future managers with a fundamental understanding of the key IT issues for effective decision-making on strategic IT initiatives and investments, and how to strategically manage the IT assets of an organization. Both managerial and technical aspects of IT project management are discussed.

Successful students should be able to:

1. Understand the strategic importance of IT in transforming the business landscape.
2. Recognize the importance of IT strategy and project management as the basis for the majority of digital transformation projects.
3. Analyze a variety of real-world business case studies using strategic approaches and frameworks such as Porter’s Five Forces model.
4. Recommend solutions to real-world business cases grounded in theory and research provided in each chapter, and use their experience to reach a solution.
5. Create an online community of IT strategic thinkers who develop discernment and judgment through their interactions across thoughtful discussions of current topics.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency with current topics in IT, including teleworking, cloud computing, security breaches, IT funding, business analytics, and ethics.
7. Learn new presentation techniques to effectively communicate IT concepts to a variety of stakeholders.
