In the Academic World
Drs. Ken and Julie Kendall are both Professors at Rutgers University. They are married and share many research and leisure interests. They have co-authored numerous articles and books, including the 11th edition of Systems Analysis and Design, and are known for their groundbreaking work on metaphors and storytelling. Their collaborative research on corporate engagement in open-source software development is widely cited. Their co-authored work has appeared in leading information systems journals, including ISR, MISQ, Decision Sciences, Information and Management, CAIS, and EJIS. Ken and Julie are the only two Fellows of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) in New Jersey.
The Kendalls have devoted over 40 years of service to their national and international academic societies. Ken (1995) and Julie (2004) were each awarded the Silver Core by IFIP (the International Federation for Information Processing) for their contributions to Working Group 8.2, which focuses on the development and use of information technologies in organizational contexts. Ken was named Educator of the Year in IS for 2010 by the Association for Information Technology Professionals. Ken is a founder of the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), now the premier research conference in information systems. He served as President of DSI and Associate Editor of Decision Sciences. Julie served as Vice President of DSI and VP of SIGs, Chapters, and Colleges for the Association for Information Systems (AIS).
In 2018, Julie was awarded the AIS Sandra Slaughter Service Award for her work as VP. The Kendalls are both Distinguished Members – Cum Laude of AIS. Julie was an Associate Editor for MIS Quarterly and CAIS. Julie is a Preeminent Editor for the INFORMS journal The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems. In 2016, Ken and Julie were inducted into the Hall of Fame by The PhD Project for their many years of mentoring minority doctoral students. Ken was presented with the 2024 PhD Alumni Achievement Award from the School of Management at the University at Buffalo. Ken was UB’s first PhD graduate in MIS. In 2025, Ken received the Rutgers School of Business-Camden Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching.
In the Theatre World
Ken and Julie Kendall are both Professors at Rutgers University. They have authored numerous articles and books, including the

their groundbreaking work on metaphors and storytelling.
They have collaborated with off-Broadway nonprofit theaters and published articles on how postcolonialism and the third design
space apply in the theater world.
Ken and Julie were invited to serve as critics for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Theatre Department (now the Johnny Carson School of Theatre & Film) and later served as official nominators for The Drama League in New York City.
The Kendalls co-authored a short play, Boathouse Row, which was a semifinalist in “Stage This! An International Short Play Competition” in New York City.
Ken and Julie have contributed to the theater community in many ways, including as partners at the Public Theater and as lifetime members of the American Theatre Wing. As patrons, the Kendalls have supported nonprofit theaters in New York City, including the Manhattan Theatre Club and the Atlantic Theater, and in Philadelphia, including The Wilma Theatre, Azuka Theatre, and 1812 Productions.
Ken, who received his Distinguished Professorship in 2007, served as the founding Chair of the Board for the Barrymore Award-winning EgoPo Classic Theater in Philadelphia. Julie served as Vice President for EgoPo, and both Ken and Julie continue to serve on the EgoPo Board. Julie has served as a member of the Rutgers Camden Center for the Arts (RCCA) since 2012.
Ken and Julie also wrote new lyrics to the Rutgers “Alma Mater,” which is sung annually at commencement.
